Device not found
PostPosted: Wed Apr 30, 2025 12:12 pm     Reply with quote

I just updated my PCM to the latest version but the Devices list did not update.
I renamed the PICC folder and installed from setup_download.exe. I also installed the MPLAB plugin.
Now the Devices folder has the newer device but the MPLAB Project Wizard appears to still see the one in the re-named OLD PICC folder.

Any suggestions?

I just contacted Microchip and they told me MPLAB is no longer supported and I should use MPLAB-X
I tried MPLAB-X years ago when it first came out and found it confusing and could not get it working.

Has anyone else run into the problem I described. The 16F18877 is in the .h file.
Where does the MPLAB project wizard find the devices? Is it an MPLAB problem or a CCS problem????? HELP

I installed MPLAB X and it is just as confusing as I remember.
I watched a Utube and none of the screens matched which was just plain annoying.

I did start a project but have no idea how to add a file and CCS C is not there so I have to try and add it.
This is not intuitive. I would really like to go back to MPLAB.
You can call me an idiot and say how wonderful X is but I would rather some useful tips.

Where is the Project Wizard, how do I add a file, how do I install the CCS plugin. The setup_mplab_plugin.exe is obviously for the old MPLAB.
What do you use? Has everyone switched to MPLAB X?

Edit 1. I found a movie on the CCS site to install CCS C and did so. Not quite like the movie but the plugin moved from available to the installed tab.
Edit 2. The CCS movie also shows how to open a source file. Not everything is the same as the screens in the movie but close enough. ICD3 does not show up as an option. This is a Microchip device so I will have to chase them for instructions. Does anyone know how to install the ICD3?

MPLABX removed the support for ICD3 in versions above 6.20, so use an older version.
I agree, MPLABX is a piece of software I wouldn't recommend even to my worst enemy. 4GB of frustrations all around. From loading time to constant updates, inability to resolve variables, slow debugging. The only thing it does ok is to heat up the computer, which comes handy on a cold day. That is why I stick to the parts that work with the old MPLAB, even if they are more expensive and often way too big for the task at hand than the new parts.

I'll 2nd what the Prince says !
Unless you absolutely NEED a feature of a 'new' PIC, stay with 'old and reliable'.

I settled on the 18F46K22 years ago, way overkill for 99.44% of all my projects BUT I KNOW it works, have library of good solid working code, and extra pins ! I wasted a LOT of time trying to use a 'new' PIC but a nasty bug led me down the wrong path for a week or more. After that , went back to the 46k22.

and third.....

Use MPLAB 8.92 if it supports what you want. If you must switch to MPLAB X
be prepared for a lot of pain.
It is not now as bad as it used to be. For about two years it fundamentally
did not work properly. 'features' just did not function, or crashed. It is now
useable, and with care will work, but it is still nowhere near as good as
MPLAB 8.92.
A very sad day when this became the only choice.... Sad
