A faster way to access structs (CCS 3.249)

Code:
   struct
   {
      char alldatayouneed;
      char otherstuff;
      ...
   }
   sample;
   char sampleraw[ sizeof(sample) ];
   #locate sampleraw = sample


value = sampleraw[30]; cuts a few instructions over value = *(&sample+30);

How does the union specifier compare?
