timer problem

HI..
I have a strange problem : using any timer i can't get a time period less then one full pass of the timer .
For example i configure the timer0 rtcc _div_1(no prescaler ) and i put in TMR0 a value less then 255.The timer period obtained is a full cycle :from 0 to 255.
Did you have a similar problem ...? I do not understand why :it's a compiler problem ,my code isn't ok ...In asembler I did obtained the right period ..

It will probably provide the answer to your problem.
If not, then post a small program that demonstrates the problem.
