curious, it'd be interesting to see if AI can take a working PIC program from another C compiler and successfully convert into PIC C.

I'm pretty sure it is among the most simple tasks for an AI. I actually got curious and checked it on claude while writing this post. And yes, it actually can convert a xc8 code for PIC-C.

I have been trying it the other way around using gemini to convert xc8 to CCS PCH and it is hopeless. it is not even able to maintain context within the same note (local workspace). It continually gives xc8 functions as supposedly ccs PCH functions and it also makes stuff up. If it provides a register address as part of the solution, the address can be from any variant of the processor even though for each query I give it the specific processor and, even when providing the specific register map, it ignores it.

Gemini, is one of the worst at ignoring things you have already told it.
Claude does seem to be better, and the best way is actually to prepare a
document containing the 'constraints' for the project and add this when
you start.
Processor
Compile.
Operating voltage and clock.
connections to each pin.
etc etc.
The more detailed you make this, the better the results.
Also when specifying 'compiler', use the full Custom Computer Services
name. I have found that all the AI's tend to pick up the Texas CCS compiler
for some functions, if you just say CCS C.
