Compiler Manual
PostPosted: Fri Aug 21, 2026 9:11 am     Reply with quote

I've noticed that in some of the example programs there are function options/features that are not documented in the compiler manual. The manual on the website is dated 2021. Are there any plans to release an update any time soon?

You'd need to ask CCS.
This is a user forum, not them.
They seem to be getting much more loth to update the .pdf manual
recently. It always lagged a bit, but is now awful. Generally though the
compiler itself is so small, that it is easier to just use the help in this.

I'd suggest you point out to them that their webpage says this is the
latest manual, and that this is very much not the case now.... Sad

I thought some of the posters on this forum were CCS employees.
Thanks for the info.

I asked CCS Tech Support, and they said they expect to release an updated manual in about a month.

Got curious myself so I dug through my files. The oldest version of the compiler that I labeled is 3.148. Have a generically named pcwhupd.exe with a file creation date from 2003, but it may actually be older than that. Pretty sure if I fire up an old machine I have sitting downstairs that I'd be able to find more than one 2.x vintage of the compiler.

Historically Darren used to be one of the moderators here, and followed
things, but he disappeared a while ago. I don't think they come here much
now.....
On old compilers, I have a few of the old V3 compilers, and a couple of V2
ones sitting on an archive database. As standard when developing code I
always 'flag' in the code what compiler was used, and keep a copy of this
with the archive sources.
I too had paper manuals when I first started.

Good news on doing an update to the pdf. It is useful sometimes. Very Happy

The oldest one I have is 2.691 from 1997.
That was back when I just used PCM.
I upgraded to PCH>PCWH at version 3.075 in 2002 and have been there ever since... wow, coming up on 30 years!

OK took me awhile but I found it !

PCM, version 2.540 , bought 13-FEB-98
cost $99 + $24 S+H

Also found my 2 PICSTART+ programmers, #2 was a freebie from Microchip, as I couldn't upgrade my original.

Crazy thing is I still drive my '97 F150.....

feeling OLD now....

I think there only was PCM in the early days.
It was only when larger chips (PIC 18 etc) appeared that PCH came along,
and the same for the 'micro' chips with PCB. For several years the compiler
only supported the PIC16 and PIC17, since these were all that existed.

New chips like the PIC16F18854 are very different from older chips. And it can be difficult to figure out how to work with peripherals independent of the core.

Yes, that is very true. Many of the newer PIC 12's, and 16's, have features
that until recently only existed on things like the DSPIC's. Unfortunately, as
with the 'manual', the other area where CCS have fallen back, is the
provision of examples for these newer parts.
Unfortunately also, MicroChip's documentation has also got much worse.
Historically they often provided examples, which while in assembly, did
show how stuff had to be setup. On recent stuff, the accuracy of the sheets
has declined (in the first 10 years, I only remember finding about two actual
data sheet errors, while I have seem this many in just the last year...).
Makes it much harder. Sad
