.crg files deleted?
PostPosted: Thu Nov 28, 2019 6:51 am     Reply with quote

I keep running into an issue with CCS whereby the .crg files are randomly deleted from C:\Program Files (x86)\PICC. I can copy them back and run CCS without problems, but a few days later, I will find that CCS fails to start because the files are missing and I have to reinstall them again.

I am running Windows 7 and PCW 4.99.3.17. Does anyone have any insight as to why this might be happening?

Assuming that CCS is not the only program on the PC and has Internet connection and AV software, some program or 'ap' is autoupdating and deleting 'old files'.
'Windows' has become a very complicated OS where even it doesn't have 100% control and 'weird' BAD things happen. One day the power register of a USB port 'magically' got reduced after working fine for months....NOW CCS is the ONLY program on my 'R&D PC'.
I'd seriously get a 2nd PC, to a true 'barebones' install of OS (NO outside connections) and clean CCS. PCs are cheap today if not free. Designate it 'CCS ONLY'....NO internet,NO router,no Word, eXcell, games, etc.....NO need to update OS and CCS updates can be done via flashdrive.

Might be windows virtual store, might be something else. On windows 7 machines I own, I've disabled the windows virtual store and haven't had issues. WVS is a sneaky way windows employs to trick you into thinking that your files are stored in a certain location but behind the scenes it actually puts them somewhere else.

Just place your license files elsewhere - if you have a second drive, that's a good place. Once you point CCS to their location, it remembers where.

My vote is the antivirus software.
You might look in quarantine and see if the files are there.

I'd say definitely one of the 'tidy up' programs. Possibly as part of your
antivirus. It removes any file that is not part of the OS, nor a 'known'
program type, and is not changed for some long interval.....

I've been keeping an eye on this and it actually looks as if the files are deleted when I start CCS, but only on some days (possibly Wednesdays).

I think I'd be suspicious that this is something to do with the Windows
virtual store. I'd suspect that possibly CCS makes some change to the files
perhaps only on Wednesday, and the virtual store does not trust the
application so it instead happens to the virtual copy, not the real file. As
a result CCS then finds it's change missing and possibly then decides the
file is invalid.
First thing I'd try is raising the permission that CCS runs under. Right
click the program, and select 'properties', 'security', and make sure your
user, has 'full control' selected (Edit to change this if necessary).
It usually does seem to be Wednesday, when CCS decides that a license
has expired, so it is possibly that this is checked at this point.
Suggest you talk to CCS about this. I've never seen a .crg file vanish, in
something like 20 years of using the package....

I've never seen the license files vanish either, but there has been 2 or 3 occasions where my current license suddenly wasn't valid anymore, even though I was on the yearly maintenance program at the time. When that did happen, I just sent CCS a message and usually within a few hours at most, they'd send me fixed files.

Dead right. I've had the same, and I do seem to think that this has
happened on Wednesdays!.
