18LF2620 serial problem solved!

Hi all respondents and thanks for your suggestions.
Two things cured the problem:
Bigger capacitor on the 3.3V regulator output
As was suggested, another terminal program!

It now works as required, using the PL2303 cheap converter. I have used a number of these without problems and at about £1.70 each!
