the 16f1613 is an amazing new part,
also the 16f1716 -
i received samples of both from Mchip !!!

So, tell CCS.

They'll probably do you a modified devices.dat in a couple of days. They have done that for me in the past when running with engineering sample chips.

i don't want to beat the drum too hard - but this part is an early family member of a fresh lineup of N E W amazing capability functions!
starting with integral zero cross detection and including an 8 bit DAC that can be used in a pseudo multiplying fashion, and a 24 bit timer counter plus
much other VERY new nice stuff for ac line control and modulators :

I wouldn't get too excited. Look at the errata rate on recent chips. Microchip seem to have got much worse recently at not actually having the hardware working when they launch new chips. I'd be very wary, until I've seen the functions working....

yeah...by the time I figure out a great real application for them, there'll be a dozen more 'neater' PICs to play with !!!

that's the problem with electronics these days, it's super easy for 'them' to create devices including complete subassemblies every month or so.

latest unit is a GPS,accellerometer,cellfone that connects to the OBD port of new cars...great technology...for $20 !!

point taken - but if i had my way, the chip i would want
would be the 18F16K19 Very Happy Very Happy
as i am so tired of cramped, banked access parts

YET the 16f is the only part they have seen fit to add any of these new features to .

Being slightly more 'positive', one thing noticeable has been that the worst 'new chips', have been in things like the 24F ranges. The recent PIC12/16 chips have not been too bad. So (maybe), they are actually separate teams, and the people doing these smaller chips are a little more competent!.... Smile

Remember that a lot of Microchip's development, is driven by 'customer demand'. A customer says 'I want a cheap PIC, with xx RAM, yy ROM, and the following peripherals', and they make this, and once they have the feature list, they start offering these to other customers. I'd suspect a single customer wanted something at a very budget price for a motor control application, so the extras they wanted were attached to a fairly basic core. You could see this being useful as the control board processor, in something like a washing machine.

I just got an e-mail product brochure on the 16F1613. They say it has fault-detecting features.

It seems to be the best thing since (insert your favorite invention here)

Just going to add another caveat...

Look again, and you will see that the version they are actually releasing, doesn't have the UART, CLC, angular timer, maths accelerator, or I2C. These are all in the 'future release' 1614/5/8/9 chips. Not the 1612/13.

Talk about getting us all excited in advance....

Hopefully not too long to wait, but wait it is.

Not too surprised, since the family has a whole suite of new peripherals, so it doesn't just need an update to the devices database, but new drivers for all of these.

The FEDEX man just brought me 3 pieces of the 16F1716 in skinny dip
a few minutes ago.
ZCD and quasi M-DAC features of the 1613 are in this chip too.

With these enhanced midrange devices, if CCS "supports" them does that mean that the compiler will use the extra assembly instructions that these parts have? I'd have thought that it would take some major rewriting of the compiler to cause this to happen. And if the compiler doesn't use the new instructions, can they at least be called for by use of inline assembly? I'm asking this because I just tried doing exactly that with a competing compiler, and it didn't use the new instructions and also rejected them in assembly code.

Wondering what instructions these are?.
If you look at the data sheet instruction list, everything shown has already been used on chip like the 1825. Still just the 49 instructions.
They talk in the product brief, about maths, but then reduce this to just a multiply, which seems not to have appeared in the data sheet.... :(
