Please Advice A New User
PostPosted: Tue Feb 15, 2011 12:06 pm     Reply with quote

Hello Everyone.
I am a new user of CCS PCWHD as I am trying to start learning to program in C .
I have being programming pic micro with Picbasicpro for the past 2 years
and due to my new job of which they use CCS I need to learn to use it.
Embarassed
I have being using the Proton Development Board below
http://www.mecanique.co.uk/products/dev-boards/proton.html
to run 18F452 programs and I have tried some example programs and all is ok.
My Question is it possible to use any of CCS debuggers with my board ?
(ICD-S40 In-Circuit Debugger/Programmer)

Or do I have to buy the PIC18F4520 Development Kit ?

Best Regards

You need an adapter that converts the 10-pin ICSP connector on
the Proton board to the RJ11 "modular" telephone connector on the
CCS ICD debuggers.

You could buy this adapter and then modify it. You could cut off the
6-pin Molex connector (the large one) and attach the 6 wires to a 10-pin
connector that plugs into the Proton board:

Or you could cut off the 6-pin Molex and solder the 6 wires to the
appropriate ICSP pins on the back of the Proton board.

If you do this, you need to carefully check that your modified connections
are correct by using an ohmmeter.

If you haven't purchased any additional hardware yet,

I'd really recommend going with an ICD3 or PICkit3 with MPLAB as you dev environment.

The CCS compilers plug right into MPLAB -- but MPSIM and a lot of other MPLAB addons are really nice.

If my clients need me to use C18/30/32 (cough cough) I'm ready to go...

But it's just my 2cents.

PCM programmer and bkamen

Thank you very much for you advice,

I was looking at the ICD-S40 because I use be able to get it on student discount as I am also studying Bsc Electronics.
I would try the ICD-S40 first just to get more practice in writting Pic C programs.

Aaliyah Very Happy
