Current Draw of the ICD-U
PostPosted: Mon Apr 07, 2003 9:34 pm     Reply with quote

I am using the ICD-U (USB version) and the new 12F675 demo board from CCS. I know that the host (demo board) provides power to the ICD but the linear regulator on the demo board get quite hot (40C above ambient measured at the TO-220 tab). Does anyone know the current draw of the ICD? FYI the linear regulator stays about the same temp with the USB cable detached.

VB

Here's an old thread that included a discussion of the hot regulator:

<a href="http://www.pic-c.com/forum/general/posts/11658.html" TARGET="_blank">http://www.pic-c.com/forum/general/posts/11658.html</a>
<a href="http://www.pic-c.com/forum/general/posts/11720.html" TARGET="_blank">http://www.pic-c.com/forum/general/posts/11720.html</a>

I've added a heatsink to the regulator and I'm now using an Astrodyne SPU15A-3 12V power supply ( <a href="http://www.astrodyne.com/astro/pdf/DSKT.pdf" TARGET="_blank">http://www.astrodyne.com/astro/pdf/DSKT.pdf</a>)
and it helps a bit but it still does get hot. It's a poor design IMHO.
