Initializing a large array

I need to initialize a array for a lookup table. I tried the statement below but received an error that the data was too big. I believe the limit is 255 characters. How should this be done?

For the 16F-series PICs, there is a limit of 256 elements in a const array.
You'll have to break that up into two arrays.

This limit doesn't apply to 18F PICs.
