ICD-U40 and 18F6520 getting unknown PIC18 device error

I am using a 18F6520 with an ICD-U40. I have successfully connected, downloaded code, and debugged several times. But now whenever I try to to connect I get an Error message "Unknown PIC18 device, ID: FF80 if this is a valid id, then make sure the algorithm inside chipedit is set correctly." It has also come back with the same message but with the ID reading FF81. Have I destroyed the chip? If so, any idea how I did it and how I can prevent doing it again? I am not to fond of soldering TQFP's by hand. Thanks.

First thing: Use the forum's search function to search for these keywords:
Unknown PIC18 device
Set it to "search for all terms". Three posts come up, which may give
you a solution.

I have reviewed those posts but they haven't helped. I have connected to the target chip previously but I can't anymore.

Try changing the programming mode to Fast(5V) in the advanced window.
Please verify:

1. The MCLR pin has a 47K to your +5V
2. There is nothing connected to MCLR except the 47K and ICD.
3. B6 and B7 are connected only the ICD.
4. B6 and B7 are connected to the right ICD pins.
5. No more the 12" of cable from B6,B7 and the ICD unit.

This is the answer of the support of ccs. AND ..is TRUE

My problem was the point number 2.
This happens with version 2.03 rev100 of the ICD.
With previous versions it did not happen.
