16F877 Usable RAM space?
PostPosted: Wed May 26, 2004 9:39 am     Reply with quote

I have run out of available RAM space in my project and am wondering if the compliler make full use of available RAM in the 16F877. When I look at the .SYM file created I don't see any ram in the areas 120 - 16F and 1A0 - 1EF being used. Also when I count up my variables I get nowhere near the 320+ bytes I would expect to have available. Am I missing something.

#device *=16

Without this, only 8 bit pointers will be used for RAM, restricting the available space to the area below 0x100.
The disadvantage is that the ROM size will be larger (expect your code to grow by perhaps 10 to 20% when you enable this option).
Put the option at the top of the code, immediately after the line including the chips definition file.

Best Wishes
