Darren

another example of limitations with the present search (or my use of it!)

assume you want to find all posts relating to or mentioning version 3.190 of the compiler.

If you search for 3.190 you get lots of hits - but not many mention 3.190 - they just matched the 3.

If you search using a wild card 3*190 you miss all the posts for 3.190 as the . in 3.190 does not seem to match the wild card search pattern.

What al I missing ?

Another idea - somewhat more work - but maybe worth forwarding to the forum authors ...

You allow each registered user to define their OWN (say 10) topic areas,
and give them the ability to assign a topic to one of the topic areas as they read it. Unique to them, no one else knows or cares. But when then read, view or search you allow them to restrict things by topic area.

A bit like email folders !

Is there something wrong with the search function? If there is something wrong with the search function let us know so me or the authors (open source) of the forum can fix it.

The search engine has these problems:

1. It can't search for a phrase (a quoted string).
Example: "Compile for use with ICD Debugger"

2. It can't search for posts from unregistered members (eg., Ttelmah).

3. It can't limit the search to the Subject line of posts.

4. I've never understood what it means when it says
"or use query as entered".

5. The treatment of underscore characters is strange.
If I select the upper search option, and search for my_func,
it will return hits for my_func and myfunc. It doesn't really
understand that the underscore should be treated as a real
character. It doesn't understand programmers.

6. I think there are other problems besides these that I can't
articulate. I just have an overall feeling that this search
engine is much less capable than the one on the previous board.
