More Forums ?

Just a small comment to any CCS people listening, I think it might be useful to add some topical forums rather than just the General forum. With 134 pages in the General forum, it makes finding information on a particular subject rather difficult. Does anyone have any comments on this idea ?

This seems a good idea.

Some suggestions for Forums are:

Serial Data Comms
Timers
Bootstrap loaders
"It wont compile ..."
Watchdogs
Analog issues
Language construct queries

I find it hard to find posts relating to (i) particular processors and (ii) the version of compiler I am using at the time, so any ideas on being able to search by these paramaters would be welcome.

I currently use 3.190 for PIC 16F876/16F877 and 18F252/18F452 and 18F6621 ...

In relation to searching, I have seen other forums use index based on keywords that the poster includes.

Perhaps if one of the topical forums was
support, but in a non demanding sort of way.
Then other users can keep up with emerging problems.

Yes. More forums are defenitely a good idea.. then perhaps have CCS give some mederator powers to some of the more active helpers here ( PCM_Programmer etc..)

I would suggest that BUGS - (or more politely "compiler issues") are still best dealt with under the various FUNCTIONAL headings, the list of which will no doubt grow.

A general arithmetic problem (with the compiler, say) would fall under the heading "Language contruct issues" as previously proposed.

If there were known issues with (say) the timer setup code it seems more usefull to find it in a Forum for TIMERS rather than one for BUGS.

A BUGS forum just seems too general to me.

I am interested in splitting up the forums into seperate topics, but often when you do this you split the userbase into two. If PCM Programmer doesn't feel like strolling through Forum X because he regularly reads Forum Y then you lose one of the best sources of help.

I don't think splitting up the forums is a necessary solution until one page is filled up with new topics in 24hours. We are getting close to that, so please continue to make suggestions.

Definately sometime in the future hardware will be in a seperate forum for the CCS ICD and the upcoming CCS stand-alone programmer.

Also, while I would trust some people here to be moderators it really isn't appropiate to have someone outside of CCS moderate the forum. If for some reason person X went AWOL or acted in-appropiately CCS would be held responsible for their actions.

Please continue to post your suggestions....

My vote is still to set up more forums now, along the lines outlined in this thread. With circa 6858 topics to date and 26230 posts at last count, I find this current forum far too unwieldy.

Another useful forum would be "Wishlists" - for ideas that are not yet in place but might be !!

And please keep in mind that a high percentage of the posts are like "I don't know why this code doesn't work" or similar...Most of the times people don't know where the problem is exactly, and this will make it difficult for them to choose in the which forum they have to post it, therefore making the splitting useless. Unless you add a 'Misc' forum, which eventually everybody will end up posting in there and it will become something like what we currently have.

I take your point that many posts relate to "I don't know why this code doesn't work" or similar - but in these instances I would expect the poster to know generally the subject area they were trying to acheive.

Heres my ADC code that does not work ... goes in AnalaogDigitialConversions

or whatever we agree to call the forums.

My interest in splitting the forum is to allow more focussed searching.

It might also be worth insisting that all code or compile related posts include the processor being used and the version of compiler.

How about adding a code library thread where people can post working code / drivers for others to use Smile

This could be added now, as questions would rarely be posted in such thread
