Hey Jeff -- I'm glad you posted the information, it's always good to know another hardcore user's experiences.
I'm currently using an ICD-40S right now and I find it quite acceptable, I definitely like the CCS debugger much better than MPLAB (the primary reason I switched).
I think the numbers CCS quotes on the ICD2 vs. CCS ICD chart are pretty old. I know the ICD2 was dog slow back when I first tried it.
Oh, and I laughed really hard at the Simpsons quote (even though I didn't see your post as whining).

Try the ICD update that was released on April 9th. It has newer download code for PIC18 that has a significant speed increase.

CCS ICD-U40 programming PIC18F252 with 86% ROM used
18.9 seconds includes verify time.
Nothing wrong with that.
The ICD-2 is collecting dust and will soon be part of my spring cleaning sale (yes the one I promised last year and never got to it !) at eBay... along with a Promate II which is the biggest heap of crap Microchip ever made. And I'm dumping my ICEPIC2 ... ICEPIC2 is a good emulator for PIC16.
