This is a good thread...
I've been really out of the loop lately working on ARM or ARM embedded into FPGAs (like the Xilinx Zynq series)
I haven't done any significant PIC coding in maybe 2 years? :(
(it makes me sad )
Definitely a bug free compiler with a solid driver base would be nice.

p.s. I'm a huge fan of anything Unix/Linux based -- using 'man' is a great idea. _________________ Dazed and confused? I don't think so. Just "plain lost" will do. :D

I use the help file (.chm). It's an interesting move to separate the 16-bit manual from the 8-bit. I find the help file reasonable.
I also agree that keeping up with new chips must take a lot of work and Microchip just seems to keep adding those. They now offer a Digitally Enhanced Power Analog Controller which is a lighting controller with a PIC instead of a PIC that supports lighting control (...???)
Having a stable, bug-free compiler is top priority, mostly because we are used to chasing our own bugs but finding a compiler bug could take days rather than hours.
As far as I know, some relatively new HW features that are not yet supported are:
Setup for CMOS/TTL input levels
Slew rate limiting
One of the annoying issues is that timers are sometimes addressed as TIMER1 and sometimes TIMER_1 . I never get it right at first try...
Altogether I give the compiler an 'A'. It's a great tool, it proved itself scalable along the years as PICs took different turns, and trading off optimization for simple development proved itself a good choice for Microchip clients who don't go for the cheapest MCUs anyway. So we pay 5 cents more to double the Flash...
