how i use ? : conditional expression operator. I can not use it please help

Code:

   int16 val1, val2;

   for (val1=0; val1<0x100; val1++)
   {
        val2=(val1<0x80)?0:10000;
        //now val2 will be 0 for va1==0 to val1==0x7F, and 10000
        //above this.
   }

It's honestly done just as easily with a basic test instead. It does not give
the optimisation in CCS that it does in some C's.
