PIC16F870-1

Does anyone know what the maximum crystal frequency is for PICF870-1/SP? I'm worried about the '-1' part and the datasheet is not very clear. Is it ok to use the chip at 4.00MHz? The VDD is a rock steady 5.00v. Thanks.

That "-1" is actually a "-I" and it means "Industrial
temperature range". According to the data sheet, all
versions (including LF) run at 20 MHz, if your Vdd is 5v.

Look near the very end of the data sheet in the section
called "PIC16F870/871 PRODUCT IDENTIFICATION SYSTEM".
This will tell you what you need to know.
